Premessa
Qualche settimana fa (in realtà credo ormai un paio di mesi fa), ho fatto il grande passo e mi sono comprato una TV LCD 37” della LG, modello LH3000-za. Non è stato un acquisto particolarmente economico, ma nemmeno troppo caso. Era solo quello che cercavo, una TV LCD FullHD con sufficienti connessioni Input/Output sul retro del pannello. Quando l’ho presa, il commesso mi ha anche proposto un modello più caro con la possibilità di attaccare via USB dischi esterni per la visione diretta di filmati, immagini e rirpoduzione di MP3, ma io non era troppo incline a sperperare altri preziosi Eurini, visto che ho dovuto comprare anche altri elettrodomestici quali lavastoviglie e consimili.
Comunque, dopo aver installato a casa la TV, mi sono accorto che sul retro aveva anche una porta USB con la scritta “Service Only”. “Interessante”, ho pensato, “Devo indagare [deformazione professionale? NdR]”. Ma poi me ne sono scordato per un bel po’.
Qualche settimana dopo…
Ieri, con un po’ di tempo per sistemare le cose a casa, ho cominciato a cercare su google qualche informazione sul televisore e mi sono imbattuto in un forum polacco nel quale, pur non avendo capito una mazza, mi sono reso conto che parlavano della possibilità di attivare la presa USB del mio televisore scancherando da qualche parte in un menu di servizio. Cercando più a fondo, ho trovato un forum in Inglese con qualche informazione in più.
Per farla breve, sono riuscito ad attivare la porta USB: ora posso vedere filmati AVI (vari codec disponibili, non ho ancora fatto tanti test), visualizzare immagini (anche direttamente via USB dalla macchina fotografica, quindi!) e riprodurre MP3.
In effetti, ho scoperto che la TV ha come sistema operativo una qualche versione di Linux embedded!
Che figata di acquisto! 🙂

Few weeks ago, I bought a LG LCD 37” television set, the LH3000-za. Not extremely cheap, not too expensive either. Just what i was looking for, FullHD and with few nice input-output plugs on the back of the panel. As I bought it, there was also the possibility to buy a more expensive model with USB external drives input capabilities, but I was not that keen in giving any single Euro more, as i also had to buy other stuff like a dishwashing machine and the likes.
Anyway, after installing the television at home, I noticed that the back panel had a USB port, labeled “service only”. “Interesting”, I though, “I must investigate further”. But then, I forgot to do it for quite a while.
Some weeks later…
Yesterday, having some time for checking stuff at home, I started google-ing for my TV set. I came across a polish forum where, although I did not understand a single word, I got an advice about using the USB port just enabling something in some service menu. So, goggle-ing more and more, I found an English forum with more info.
Long story short, I managed to get the USB up and working: I can watch AVI movies (many codecs supported, yet not tested much), images (cameras can be connected directly via USB!) and even play MP3s. In fact, I also discovered the TV uses Linux as operating system!
That was a cool buy! 🙂
